Verlia Faye Alfrey Short, 88, of Oceana, WV passed away on Friday November 26, 2021 at her home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on September 26, 1933 in McDowell County, WV a daughter of the late Virgil and Narie Queen Alfrey. Faye attended Concord College, along with her husband, before deciding to become a Beautician. She was a graduate of Little French Beauty Academy in Bluefield, WV. She worked for many years in Oceana as a Beautician and developed many friendships in her profession. Faye and Gerald lived in Oceana since 1958. She was a devoted member of the Oceana First Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her son Micah Gerald Short brothers Ralph Alfrey, Clyde Alfrey, Charlie Alfrey, and her twin Ray Alfrey and sister Imogene Alfrey Black.
Survivors include her husband Gerald L. Short, whom was the love of her life. They were high School sweethearts and were married for almost 71 years. Sister Jannia Lee Alfrey Bostic of Oceana brother James Marvin Alfrey (Judy) of Beckley daughter-in-law Michelle Short of Oceana two grandchildren of whom she was very proud of, Cody Micah Short (Kyra) of Beckley, and Chase Austin Short of Oceana and a host of nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends. Funeral service will be held at 12:30 pm on Wednesday, December 1st at the Oceana First Baptist Church, Oceana, WV with Pastor Jerry Cook officiating. She will be laid to rest in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, WV. Friends may gather with the family from 10:30 am until time of service on Wednesday at the church. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Thanks to special friends and helpers, Joy Mayberry, Mitzi Mitchell, Delinda Phillips, Marci Rollins, Darlene Black Keller, Ricky and Janet Hicks, Michelle Short, Cody and Kyra Short, and Hospice of Southern West Virginia for taking such loving care of her.
