Roger Dale Gibson, 74, of Maben, WV, passed away on Friday August 28, 2020 at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, WV following a long illness. He was born on January 20, 1946 in Kopperston, WV a son of the late Clarence Lee “Buck” and Erna Lucille Bishop Gibson. Roger attended Oceana High School, and shortly after, he joined the United States Navy, Serving until 1967. He served on three vessels during his tenure in the Navy, U.S.S. Boxer (CV-21), U.S.S. Oglethorpe (AKA-100), and U.S.S. Luzerne County (LST-902). Shortly after getting out of the military, he met his wife, and they were married in 1968. Roger was a boss in the coal mines working most of his time at Console’s Itmann Mine. He loved fishing and the outdoors.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Carol Sue Blankenship Gibson; two daughters Kimberly Michelle (Floyd) Adkins of McGraws and Erica Elaine (Lester) Frankum of Lester; three grandsons Austin Tyler Adkins, Nicholas Tanner Adkins and Zachary Frankum; a great granddaughter Zamira Frankum; four sisters Diana (Tim) Donathan of Christiansburg, VA, Debbie (Thomas) Toler of Rincon, GA, Betty (James “J. D.”) Parris of Glade Spring, VA, and Madonna (Rod) Burchett of Stanford, KY; a brother Donald Lee “Goldwater” (Toni) Gibson of Oceana; and a host of nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends.
Funeral service will be held at 1pm on Friday September 4th in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, WV with Rev. Paul Manning officiating. He will be laid to rest in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, WV. Friends may gather with the family from 6-9 pm on Thursday September 3rd at the funeral home. The Wyoming County Veterans Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
