An Oceana man has been charged with attempted murder.
Tracy Stewart, 46, allegedly struck his girlfriend, 50-year-old Lenora Ellis, in the head and on the arm with an axe, according to Oceana Police Chief J.E. Barlow.
Police were called to the scene at 12:40 a.m. on March 15 in Short’s Trailer Park and reportedly found Ellis unconscious and unresponsive on the floor of the mobile home.
“She had severe head wounds and arm wounds,” Barlow stated.
Stewart was arrested at the residence and remains in Southern Regional Jail. He faces one count each of attempted murder and malicious wounding.
Ellis was taken to the Trap Hill Fire Department, Barlow said, and then flown via HealthNet to the Charleston Area Medical Center.
Ellis is reportedly in critical condition.
Patrolmen Johnson and Spears investigated, aided by Barlow and Assistant Chief R.L. Paynter.
The investigation continues, and further charges are pending, Barlow indicated.
