Westside and Wyoming East are headed to Round Four.

The Class AA No. 4 Renegades and No. 5 Warriors each won their Region 3, Section 1 semifinal in Beckley on Tuesday night, setting up a championship game on Thursday.

Westside crushed Independence, 91-47, and East beat Summers County, 71-46.

This will be the fourth, and most important, meeting between the arch rivals this year. The Renegades (17-6) have won two of the previous three.

“They know what we’re going to do, and we know what they’re doing to do,” said WHS coach Nick Cook. “I think it will come down to a matter of execution. The team that executes better will win.”

East jumped to a 28-6 lead in the first 10-plus minutes of the first semi on Tuesday. The Warriors shot over 50 percent in the first half and dominated the boards as well. In one sequence, East got five shots before converting.

“We came out fast,” said WEHS coach Rory Chapman. “When we’re shooting well, rebounding and not turning the ball over, we’re hard to beat.”

The Warriors (16-7) held a 37-20 margin at the half and scored the first six points of the third quarter. Summers County (12-10) was never closer than 15 after the first period.

Brett Bowling paced a balanced offense with 16 points. Josh Tunstalle had 14, and Cody Lester scored 13. Christian Hedinger added 10.

Westside used a 23-0 run in the first stanza to open up a 32-8 advantage and cruised on from there.

“We wanted to come out and set the tempo, and that’s what we did,” Cook said.

Justin Cogar tallied 15 for the Renegades. Corey Bowles had 13, followed by Jordan Browning (11) and Will Fox (10).
