The Wyoming County Board of Education approved a resolution regarding the site of the new Huff Consolidated School at last Monday’s meeting.

“The resolution asked that the U.S. Department of Education convey that property to us,” said Superintendent of Schools Frank “Bucky” Blackwell.

Lizzard Creek will be the site for the new school.

“We’re working on a big federal document (on the property transfer) and a lot of information has to be provided,” Blackwell commented.

Huff will be moved out of the flood plain at the new location. The school was flooded in 2009 and 2010.

In other news, the BOE submitted a new HVAC system for Oceana Middle School as its Major Improvement Project (MIP).

The grant request has already been sent to the School Building Authority (SBA).

“The SBA only has $10 million to spend in the whole state, and all the counties will be asking for half a million or more,” Blackwell noted. “It doesn’t take long to spend $10 million.”

Funding recipients will be announced in December.

The board is also seeking a $178,962 “3 percent” grant from the SBA for upgrades at the Career and Technical Center.

These would include improvement to to the ventilation at the welding shop and machine shop.

“A lot of what is done at the Career Center is computer driven and technology driven,” Blackwell pointed out. “We updated 10 years ago, but it needs to be improved.

“We think our chances for that grant are a little better because we have never asked for a lot for our Career Center in the past,” he said. “It would be great to get both grants, but our chances might be a little better on the 3 percent grant this time.”

Also planned for the CTC is complex-wide wireless.

“There’s some wireless there already,” Blackwell stated, “but we want to have it throughout the building.

“We’re going to work hard to get funded,” he added.
