Westside won its first ever regional golf championship and advanced to state along with county rival Wyoming East.

The Renegades shot 248 to claim the Region III crown on Monday at Grandview.

Hunter Owens and Drew Bragg both shot 80s to lead WHS.

“It’s great to win out first regional championship, but it’s even better to go back to state,” Bragg said.

Westside went to Wheeling last year after losing by one stroke to Shady Spring in the regionals.

East won the second place spot, nipping Summers County by one stroke.

The Warriors fired a 257 to SC’s 258.

Only when the Bobcats No. 3 seed returned with the final group of golfers with an 86 did East know it would be going to state. SC needed an 85 to force a playoff.

“We had to sweat this one out,” stated East coach Robert “Doc” Warner.

The state tournament starts next Tuesday.
