The Oceana Public Library is reminding Wyoming County students that one of the most important school supplies to have this fall is a library card.

Owning a library card provides students the resources they need to compete academically, according to Laura Mellon of the Oceana Public Library.

Most public libraries (89.6 percent) provide students free access to databases of news articles, encyclopedias and test preparation materials, homework help and resources.

Mellon said public libraries are the number one access point for free Internet access, an important resource for families without access at home. About 96 percent of school districts require students to use the Internet to complete their homework, she reported.

During Library Card Sign-up Month each person that signs up for a card will be included in a drawing for a prize at the end of September.

Anyone who lives, works, or attends school in Wyoming County, or is a resident of West Virginia is eligible for a Mountain Library Network card. Persons who have the green and tan MLN cards do not need another card, Mellon indicated.

Adult applicants must provide current address information, and current photo ID, or two non-photographic IDs. Applicants younger than 18 must have a parent or guardian present when applying for a library card. Cards are free to first-time applicants.
