Dakota Boulet's sacrifice fly RBI broke a 5-5 tie, and Liberty went on to nip Westside for the Region 3, Section 3 championship on Saturday afternoon at Clear Fork.
"It was one of those games where a couple of bounces made the difference," said WHS coach Jeremy Hedinger. "The Lacek guy (of Liberty) made a diving catch in center field that kept us from scoring a couple of runs. And James (Robertson of Westside) just missed by inches making a diving play for a ball hit in the outfield."
Liberty took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third.
The Renegades (19-14) evened it up in the fourth.
Breyer Morgan doubled to right-center to lead off the inning.
One out later, Tyler Cook's fly ball moved Morgan to third.
Elswick doubled hard to right to score a run, making it 4-4.
WHS left two on base.
J. R. Harper opened the Westside fifth with home run to center. But the Renegades left two runners on.
The Raiders knotted the score in the bottom of the fifth when Boulet singled, moved to second when a teammate walked, advanced to third on a dropped pop fly and scored when Austin Lyons struck out but the ball rolled to the back stop.
With one out in the Raiders sixth, Joey Lacek walked and Jacob Purdue singled to put runners at the corners.
Boulet's fly to deep left score the go-ahead run.
Corey Dishmon went the distance, striking out eight in getting the win.
Harper fanned four and took the loss.
Lacek had a home run and two RBI for Liberty. Lyons and Seth Prince each had two hits. Boulet was 3-4.
Harper had a home run and Forren tripled for WHS. Morgan was 3-4 with a double, and Copley connected for two hits.
Westside battled out of the loser's bracket to reach the final.
"I was proud of them for not laying down," Hedinger stated. "These kids will fight to the end."
Westside finishes at 19-4.
"These kids have won a lot of games the last two years," Hedinger remarked. "This has always been a basketball and football school and we'd like to make it a baseball school, too. We had a great crowd today."
Robertson, Harper, Forren, Smith and Cook are the seniors on the team.
"We're going to miss these guys," the coach said.
Liberty will host either Wyoming East or Bluefield in the regional semifinals.
