Well known area minister dies

CHAUNCEY, W.Va. — A well known area minister, Rev. Preston Vance, 93, of Chauncey, died Sunday, May 6, 2012, at Logan Regional Medical Center.

A native of Beauty, Ky., Rev. Vance had been a long-time pastor of several local churches and was the founder of Beth Haven Christian School at Omar.

Vance was also a retired coal miner, a member of the UMWA, and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

As a pastor, Vance served the congregation of the Mt. Calvary Freewill Baptist Church at Atenville for 12 years and Walnut Grove Freewill Baptist Church at Chauncey for 23 years. He was also a member of the several other churches and conferences.

Vance is survived by his wife, Estelle Gartin White Vance; one son, David Vance; one daughter, Geraldine Adkins; a step-son, Mark (Kay) White, and a step-daughter, Linda Kay White, and one adopted daughter, Faye Tomblin McCoy.

Services for Vance will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at the Walnut Grove Freewill Baptist Church. Collins Funeral Home of Switzer is in charge of the arrangements.
