Deputy coroner Larry Carroll says 42-year-old Bryant Holder died Wednesday of multiple blunt force injuries.
Police spokesman Phil Russell says witnesses told police that before the man was hit around 9:20 p.m., several people who may have been juveniles assaulted him in the street.
The attackers fled. He then was hit by a car that drove away.
The Courier-Journal reports police do not believe the hit-and-run was related to the assault.
Police are looking for the person who was driving a green vehicle, possibly a Dodge Caravan, Russell says.
