Thousands without power: Update
by John Conley

Update: Power was restored to downtown Pineville on Saturday evening.

Appalachian Power showed the number of Wyoming County customers without power had dropped to 5,200 on Sunday afternoon, but by Sunday evening that number had risent to 6,200.

Statewide, APCO has restored power to about 55,000 customers as of late Sunday afternoon.

Appalachian Power estimates that it will be Thursday night (July 5) before electricity is fully restored in the county.

With electricity and gasoline in short supply (some motorists were stranded along highways with no gas this weekend), Mullens—which has retained power throughout the emergency—became a hub of activity. Cars lined up for fuel at the city’s gas stations, and restaurants were crowded.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin declared a state of emergency for the entire state on Friday night.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the 90s through this week.
