Sen. Joe Manchin talked about drugs, the EPA and background checks for gun purchases during his town hall meeting at the Wyoming County Courthouse on Thursday.
Manchin said he supports moving hydrocodone from an FDA Schedule 3 drug to Schedule 2.
The classification change would limit doctors to prescribing it for a 30-day period and two 30-day refills.
He said the drug would be under “better control” in Schedule 2. “People who need it would still have it,” he commented.
“You can reduce the cheap availability of it,” Manchin added.
Drugs were also discussed during the Q and A which followed the senator’s opening remarks.
D.J. Morgan, an area attorney, said the documentary film “Oxyana” inaccurately depicts Oceana in a “really inaccurate” way.
He said a request to the filmmaker to screen the picture in Oceana was denied.
Morgan charged that the film claims that 85 percent of the town’s residents are drug addicts. “That number should be reversed,” he remarked.
He said a town hall meeting will be held in Oceana on May 31 to discuss the documentary.
Later, the Senator said the EPA has been “overreaching” its authority in retroactively revoking mining permits which has been approved earlier.
He said the need for coal would continue and that China and India both burn far more coal than the U.S.
The U.S. should develop the technology for cleaner coal “and sell the technology to the rest of the world,” he commented.
Manchin also discussed his recently failed legislation regarding background checks on gun purchasers, aimed at preventing criminals and mentally ill persons from buying firearms.
The bill wouldn’t have affected private gun trading among family and friends, he noted.
“We’re not talking about banning any weapons,” he stated. “We don’t want to take your guns away.”
