Michael Yost hit three treys in a two-minute span and Bluefield had an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter as the Class AA No. 1 Beavers held off No. 8 Westside, 67-56, on Monday night in the Big Atlantic Classic in Beckley.

The Renegades went toe-to-toe with Bluefield for three quarters but couldn’t quite pull off the upset.

“I thought we had a good game plan, especially defensively,” said WHS coach Nick Cook. “We just need to execute for 32 minutes.”

WHS (9-6) took a 35-34 edge midway through the third on Levi Lambert’s driving lay up.

David Edwards converted a three-point play off a follow shot to put the Beavers back in front.

Jason Scarlett of Westside cut the margin to one on a free throw.

Bluefield scored twice in the last minute of the quarter, the last being a Yost three-pointer as the buzzer sounded.

Yost would connect from long distance twice more, and the last one started an 8-0 spurt which stretched the Beavers lead to 53-42.

“You have to give (Yost) credit, he made good shots,” Cook remarked.

Westside narrowed the gap to 59-53 on Justin Cogar’s three-point play with 1:10 left, but Bluefield finished the game off at the foul line.

“We were trying to trap at the end,” Cook said, “But I guess the referees thought we were fouling (intentionally).”

Westside started strong on both ends of the court. They had no trouble solving the Bluefield press and had a 7-0 run late in the first quarter to take a 19-12 advantage.

Corey Bowles, who had a game-high 22, had a three and Justin Kenneda scored from 15 feet in the spurt.

The Renegades also stuck to Bluefield stars Lykel Collier and Anthony Eades like velcro and contained them for much of the evening.

Westside went five minutes without scoring late in the first and on into the second, and the Beavers had a 12-0 burst.

Collier tied it with a three-pointer and then knocked down another to put Bluefield ahead.

The Beavers held a 28-25 edge at the half.

It remained tight through the third period, but Yost’s zone-busting threes and a series of Westside turnovers early in the fourth gave Bluefield a chance to get some separation.

Foul trouble was also a problem for the Renegades in the game’s late stages, and both Scarlett and Levi Lambert fouled out.

Bowles had 22 and Cogar added 16 to lead WHS.

Lambert added nine points and four assists.

Collier scored 19 for the Beavers. Yost and Eades contributed 17 each.

Westside had a 26-23 edge on the boards.

The Renegades play Robert C. Byrd or Wyoming East Wednesday evening in the BAC Class AA consolation game.
