James Monroe scored four runs in the second inning and pitcher Mikayla Wickline threw a one-hitter as the Mavericks topped Westside, 6-2, in the Class AA Region 3 championship game at Lindside on Thursday.
Westside took a 2-0 lead in the first when Logan Osborne walked and later scored on an error. Kasey Walls came home on a passed ball later in the inning.
The Mavs used bunting to create scoring chances in the second and went on top for good.
Laine Shiflet blasted a solo home run to lead off the JM fifth to make it 5-2.
Later in the inning, Samantha Ferguson singled to left. Wickline walked, and Rebecca Ratliff laid down a bunt single in front of the plate to load the bases.
Kelsey Gillispie blooped a single to shallow left to drive in another run, increasing the margin to 6-2.
WHS (21-7) had just three base runners after the first inning.
Taylor Grimmett’s bunt drew an error in the second, but she was stranded on base.
Kasey Walls had a single with one out in the third. A double play erased that threat.
Stephanie Brown drew a walk with two out in the seventh, but Wickline retired the next batter to clinch the win.
Westside worked its way out of several jams to keep the game close.
Blankenship struck out a batter with the bases loaded in the third. The Lady Renegades turned a double play in the fourth, throwing out runners at first and at home.
Wickline fanned 12 in picking up the win.
Blankenship had three strikeouts.
