Westside rolled to the Coalfield Conference West golf title on Monday, winning by 17 strokes.
The Renegades shot a 303 and were the only team to have three players put up sub-80 scores.
Hunter Owens of WHS was the medalist with a 69. Katelyn Sanders fired an 83 and was the female medalist.
“My putting was a little off, but everything else was fine,” stated Owens.
A light rain began to fall in the afternoon, and Owens said that actually helped. “It made the ground a lot softer and it was easier to get to the hole,” he noted.
Corey Bowles had a 75 and Drew Bragg shot 76. Both made the all-tournament team along with Owens and Sanders.
Renegades coach Tim Spolarich worried after last season if he would find a fourth strong golfer to help the team make a second strip to the state tournament.
He found more than one.
“Casey Davis has been the medalist a couple of times and Katelyn has really come through for us,” Spolarich noted. “And Derek Johnson has helped the team also.”
With regionals just a week away, Spolarich expects to play at Grandview (the regional site) once or twice this week.
“We have to play well if we’re going to make it to state,” he commented. “We’re 48-7-1, but Wyoming East, Summers County and James Monroe have all beaten us and they’ll be there. There are several teams capable of going.”
There will be 12 teams in the regional, and the top two move on to Wheeling.
“Our kids get out and play every day, and that’s what it takes to get better in high school sports,” Spolarich said.
“Everybody just needs to (go to Grandview) and have a good time and not play with a lot of pressure,” Owens remarked. “Just do what we’ve always done.”
East took second on Monday, shooting 320. Dakota Hood made the all-tourney team with a 77. Tayor Dehaven of River View carded a 77 as well and made all-tourney.
River View was third with a 386. Liberty shot 388, and Independence was at 401.
