Westside isn’t as consistent as coach Darren Thomas would like. But it’s hard to argue with 50 points.

Quarterback Justin Cogar and running back Mike Mullens both rushed for over 100 yards as the Renegades spanked Independence, 50-20, on Friday at Clear Fork.

“Our guys have to learn that you can’t just turn it off and on,” Thomas said. “We haven’t played four good quarters yet, and we’re going to have to with some of the teams we have coming up on the schedule. We just have to be more consistent.”

WHS scored twice in the first five minutes to take the lead for good.

Mullens raced 48 yards for a TD less than 30 seconds into the game. Cogar connected with Dylan Newsome for the extra points, making it 8-0.

The Patriots snapped the ball over the punter’s head on their first series, and the Renegades recovered deep in Indy territory.

Cogar took it in from four yards out on fourth and goal. His pass to Newsome pushed the lead to 16-0 at the 7:15 mark.

It was quiet for most of the rest of the half. “We hit a lull,” stated Thomas.

Independence mixed the pass and the run to drive 70 yards on 13 plays late in the half. Aaron Tolliver crossed the goal line on fourth down to put the Patriots on the board.

Tolliver also ran for the extra points to cut the margint o 16-8.

Westside had to punt but still got the ball back near midfield with 1:58 showing.

Senior Dylan Newsome caught a 15-yard pass from Cogar to pick up a key first down at the Indy 37 with less than a minute to play.

Newsome had six receptions on the night. “Justin and I have been staying after practice and working on our timing,” he remarked.

Cogar’s 10-yard touchdown toss to Hunter Walker with 9.6 ticks to go extended the Renegades lead.

Cogar threw to Mullens for the conversion, and it was 24-8.

“We’ve been wanting to throw the ball more,” Thomas commented. “We’re going to have to be able to throw against some of these teams.”

A 64-yard Cogar scoring run in the third extended the lead to 30-8.

The Renegades added three touchdowns in the final stanza: A 61-yard TD pass from Cogar to Corey Bowles, a 60-yard carry by Mullens and a 17-yard run for Cogar.

Cogar fan for 164 yards and passed for 171.

Mullens added 137 yards rushing. Bowles had two receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. Newsome had an interception as well as six receptions.

“I like getting an interception (more than making a catch on the offensive side) because it stops the other team and gives us another chance,” Newsome said.

Westside hosts unbeaten Scott this Friday.
