Wyoming East’s players and coaches took the positives from Wednesday’s six-point loss to No. 4 Summers County.

“Even though we lost, we feel like we won,” said East forward Chelsea Duncan, who scored 32 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the 70-64 setback to the Lady Bobcats.

“I was proud of everyone,” remarked WEHS coach Angie Boninsegna. “I hope we keep it up.”

The Warriors were tied with SC, 47-47, when Duncan scored one of her many lay ups off the fast break.

Tyra Wynes hit a three-pointer to start an 8-0 spurt that put SC ahead to stay.

East closed the gap to 55-51 early in the fourth period but lost ground in a span where they went 3-9 for at the line.

Summers led by ten on two occasions, the last at 68-58.

A Duncan lay up and a Hannah Ford drive for two cut it to 68-62 with 1:40 left.

The Lady Warriors had a couple of chances to get even closer but could not convert.

“We’re still learning,” stated Boninsegna, whose team is made up primarily of freshmen and sophomores

WEHS stayed competitive in the game largely through its ability to break the Summers press.

Duncan broke away repeatedly for shots throughout the contest.

East has struggled against the press in the past.

“Everyone was moving and finding who was open,” Duncan commented.

The Warriors led by as much as 17-9 in the opening quarter when Duncan scored with two minutes left.

The Bobcats closed the gap to 21-19 by the end of the quarter.

Audrey Holley knocked down a pair of treys late in the second stanza to give Summers a 33-27 margin.

SC increased the lead to 39-30 on two foul shots from Wynes.

Chiara Jewell and Duncan made free throws for East, and Allison Lovins connected inside.

Another foul shot from Jewell slice the deficit to 39-36 by halftime.

East took its last lead, 42-41, on a Duncan bucket off a feed from Ford.

“I think depth made a difference,” Boninsegna said. “We had Bre Pertee and Hailey Lowman in foul trouble early, and Summers plays nine or 10 people.”

Jewell had 12 points and 13 boards for the Warriors. Pertee (11) and Ford (10) were also in double digits in rebounds.

Wynes had 19 points and eight rebounds for Summers (10-2). Hayley Shrewsbury added 11, and Abby Taylor scored 10.

East will host PikeView on Monday.
