Westside’s Lady Renegades softball team is headed to state.

Now what?

The state tournament is a two-day, double-elimination event held at Jackson Park in Vienna (near Parkersburg) on May 28 and 29.

Action takes place on three fields. Class AA will play on Field One.

Westside (18-2) will take on Region 1 champion Ritchie County (25-5) at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Region 2 champion Petersburg (23-5) will play Region 4 winner Herbert Hoover (29-6) 30 minutes after the first game.

The second session starts at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The losers of the two morning games play first. Winners of the first two games play 30 minutes later.

The first session on Thursday begins at 9:30 a.m. and features an elimination game.

The AA championship game is set for 2:15 p.m. Thursday. There could be another game “if necessary” to determine the champion.

Ritchie County beat East Fairmont, 3-1, in its regional final.

Westside flew under the radar for most of the year and finished No. 11 in the final state softball poll. Ritchie was No. 5.

The two teams had no regular season foes in common.

Hoover, ranked No. 1, beat two-time defending champion Wayne, 1-0, in the Region 4 title game.

Petersburg, No. 6 at the end of the year, topped Liberty Harrison, 8-0, to win Region 2.
