A big inning gave Wyoming East the upper hand in the sectional tournament.
Christian Hedinger slugged a three-run home run in an eight-run third inning and the Warriors went on to beat Westside, 16-0, in the AA Region 3, Section 2 tournament at New Richmond on Monday evening.
“It took us a while to get going,” said East coach Ron Mayhew. “But the second time through you start to get your timing down (when you’re hitting).”
The No. 6 ranked Warriors were already up, 3-0, when Jonathan Culicerto took a bases loaded walk to force in a run.
Tristan Toler doubled to left to drive in two runs and push the lead to 6-0.
Chad Presley followed with a two-run single.
There were two runners on when Hedinger came to the plate for the second time in the inning.
His third round tripper of the season was a shot into the left field corner.
“I thought we did pretty good until the third inning,” said Renegades coach Jeremy Hedinger. “We’ve been plagued by the big inning all year and that’s what happened again today.”
The Warriors added five runs in the fourth. Culicerto singled sharply to left to bring a run home.
Presley later cleared the bases with a double to make it 15-0.
Michael Browing singled to drive in the final run of the night.
Josh Zeboskey struck out nine in picking up the win.
“We let them get the leadoff batter on in a couple of innings,” Mayhew said. “We have to work on that because the leadoff hitter scores 80 percent of the time (if he reaches safely).”
Breyer Morgan took the loss for WHS.
“I’m hoping tomorrow we can hang around until the fourth or fifth inning and see what happen,” Hedinger stated.
The teams play again at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
