Westside tops North Marion, goes to 4-0
By John Conley
It was a “weird game,” according to Westside coach Nick Cook.
“Even though we didn’t shoot the ball well, we found a way to score,” he said of his team’s 78-55 win over North Marion on Friday might at Clear Fork.
The Renegades used hustle and opportunity to lead from 5-4 in the early minutes to the finish and kept the taller Huskies off balance.
Westside used a 7-0 run, highlighted by Justin Cogar’s three-point play and a steal and layup by Corey Bowles.
It was 9-8 when the Renegades scored eight unanswered points: Will Fox had a three from the right side, Kenneda scored off a feed from Cogar and Fox rebounded a missed throw and laid it back in. It was 17-8.
WHS took a 23-10 lead into the second stanza
The Huskies (3-2) went on an 8-0 run and pulled within 23-18 on Matthe Martin’s trey.
Bowles drove to the bucket and hit a follow shot as he reeled off six straight points and made it 29-18.
Westside held a 37-27 lead at the break.
The Renegades extended the lead through the third quarter. Kenneda’s 10 footer along the baseline made it 57-40.
A 13-2 spurt boosted the margin to 70-44 early in the fourth, and North Marion didn’t threaten again.
Bowles had 24 points. Fox (16), Cogar (15) and Kennda (13) were also in double digits.
Cook praised the play of Jordan Browning.
“He came in and did an excellent job,” Cook said. “He played great defense and rebounded the ball.
“We thought Levi (Lambert) would be released to play today, but he wasn’t and Jordan did well,” he added.
Lambert suffered an eye injury a week ago in a game with Tug Valley. He said he expected to be ready to go for next Friday’s game at Wyoming East.
Cody Opron and Martin tallied 12 each for North Marion. Cole Richards added 10.
“North Marion does some good things, and they have a lot of size,” said Cook.
