The New River Community and Technical College Mercer County Campus will at last have a home of its own thanks to a lease signed with the City of Princeton and the City of Princeton Building Commission on Thursday, July 17.
“This is a very exciting moment in the history of New River Community and Technical College,” said President L. Marshall Washington. “There is great potential for the college to grow in Mercer County, and we will at last have facilities to allow us to accommodate that growth. We are also delighted that we have been able to find a location that makes New River part of the revitalization of downtown Princeton.”
The college will lease the former First Community Bank building on Mercer Street in Princeton for $11,850 per month. The rental fee is based on the City of Princeton’s loan payments for the purchase and renovation of the property. The college plans to purchase the building from the city, and the portion of the lease payment that reflects the principal portion of the loan payment will be credited to the ultimate purchase price.
New River CTC is already making preparations to start classes in the new building on Aug. 18. Applications are still being accepted for the fall semester, and students can register for classes through Aug. 8.
Since New River was created by the legislature in 2003, the Mercer County Campus has been co-located within facilities owned by other institutions. It was originally located on the campus of Bluefield State College, and in 2009 it moved into the Mercer County Technical Education Center in Princeton.
“We greatly appreciate the support we have received from the Mercer County Board of Education in allowing us to be located at MCTEC for the past five years. Linda Cox and her staff have been gracious and helpful, and we thank them for all they have done for us,” Washington said.
New River Community and Technical College serves nine counties in southeastern West Virginia from four main campuses: Greenbrier Valley Campus (Lewisburg), Mercer County Campus (Princeton), Nicholas County Campus (Summersville) and Raleigh County Campus (Beckley). Administrative offices are located in Beckley.
