Family Fair Day gives residents of the Wyoming Nursing and Rehabilitation Center to enjoy the activities of a typical fair or festival.

“They can’t go out to the fair, so we bring the fair to them,” said Joyce Bailey, activities assistant at the 60-bed facility in New Richmond.

This year’s event was held last Thursday evening.

It included a petting zoo, pony ride, bounce house, water slide, face painting, fair-style foods, cake walks and, to top it all off, fireworks.

“We try to make it affordable (for people to attend),” Bailey said. “We have a variety of activites for everyone.”

Preparing for Fair Day takes a while, she noted, but entire staff gets involved. “Every department (contributes),” she remarked. The staff really looks forward to it.

“We have a good team effort,” she commented.

“This is the (residents) home, and we treat it like it’s their home,” Bailey stated.

While Fair Day is one of the highlights of the year, activities take place at the center on a daily basis.

Gospel singers from area churches, Bible study, games (such as wheel of fortune and Bingo), manicures, hair care and exercises and current events discussions are all regularly scheduled.

Nearly a dozen churches in the county will have groups visiting the center in July alone.

They also do crafts and have outside time on the patio.

Birthdays of residents are celebrated.

“We do activities 365 days a year,” Bailey observed.

She says the area has shown strong support for the facility through volunteerism and other means.

“This is a community with a loving heart,” she remarked.John Conley can be reached at 304-732-6060 or on Twitter @PIHnews
