One man was killed Monday as the result of a wreck on U.S. Hwy. 25E, near the intersection with Lower Caney Valley Road. No other vehicles were involved.

According to a report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), Bobby E. Wolfe, 28, of Bulls Gap, Tenn., was driving a 2006 Suzuki small SUV southbound on U.S. Hwy. 25E “at a high rate of speed.”

The vehicle hydroplaned due to rainwater on the roadway, causing the vehicle to go into a spin, the report states. The vehicle then ran off the right side of the roadway. Wolfe’s vehicle was traveling backward at that point and struck a large utility pole.

Upon impact with the utility pole, the report states large pieces of metal that were in the rear of the vehicle went through the vehicle and struck the driver in the back of the head.

A passenger in the vehicle, Derek Chadwick Greene Nichols, 26, of Morristown, was injured in the wreck. He was cited for not wearing a seat belt and charged with two counts of theft under $500 and one count of criminal trespassing.

Neither Wolfe nor Nichols were wearing a seat belt, according to the report, although the investigating trooper said they probably would not have made a difference.

In addition to the THP, the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department, Claiborne County EMS and the Springdale Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene.

Trooper Toby Cameron is the investigating officer. More charges may be forthcoming.
