It was just a matter of time.

Colin Bowles, a 14-year-old who finishes up the eighth grade this week, won the Wyoming County Open on Sunday with a two-day total of 128.

No one was surprised.

Bowles, whose father, Toney, says “Colin lives on the golf course,” has been on the radar of the golf-savvy for years.

He’s the second youngest winner of the open. The late Benny Bowles was 13 when he won the event.

Colin shot a 62 on Saturday and followed that up with a 66 on Sunday.

He finished five strokes ahead of runner-up Reuben Prillaman and six ahead of third place Matt Stollings.

“Today I was hitting my drives real good,” Bowles commented. “I didn’t putt as well as I usually do. Yesterday, I hit everything good and made my putts.”

He had five birdies on Sunday. A key hole, he said, was No. 9.

“I had a bad chip shot and then made a 25-foot shot for birdie. That was a round saver.

“It feels great (to win),” he stated. “It’s one of the tournaments I want to win the most.”

“He’s been growing, so he’s added length to his game,” observed Toney Bowles.

He says Colin is totally dedicated to the game.

“I try to get him to take a day off once in a while, but he won’t do it,” Toney Bowles remarked.

“If he stays dedicated, he can go as far as he wants,” he remarked. “He just loves golf.”

“I’m proud of both of my kids,” Bowles said. (Older son Corey is an all-stater in basketball).

“Angie and I have been very blessed to have a good family,” he added.

There were 114 at this year’s open.

“It’s not as many as we would like to have, but with the way the economy is, we know there are people who don’t have the extra money for a golf tournament,” Bowles said.

Sponsors included Pineville Furniture, Westside Pharmacy, Goodson’s, Kissel Optometry and Oceana Dental.

There were over 10 flights.

“We ran out of heavy metals,” Bowles quipped when announcing the winners of the Rust Flight.
