Danielle Brown started the game hitting threes and finished it hitting frees.
The Westside senior knocked down key three-pointer early in the game and was 8-8 at the line in the fourth quarter as the AA No. 3 Lady Renegades beat No. 4 Summers County, 57-45, in the Region 3, Section 1 championship game at Wyoming East.
Brown was named the tournament MVP.
“I came ready to play tonight,” Brown said. “When I hit those two threes, it gave me confidence that I was going to have a good game.”
“Danielle has always been a big play player,” commented WHS coach Jamie Lusk. “Teams have to respect her shooting ability.”
Brown made two threes in the opening period to give the Renegades the lead for good at 6-3.
A 6-1 run early in the second quarter increased the gap to 14-8.
All-state center Hope Lester had to go out with foul trouble, but Westside continued to add to its lead.
Faith Davis hit a trey from the right side and drove to the bucket to make it 19-11.
Brown and Davis each hit threes as the Renegades built their biggest lead of the half at 29-15.
“I expect (good play) from my seniors,” said Lusk. “And the girls who come off the bench give us some big minutes.”
It was 29-17 at the break.
SC was never able to trim the margin below double digits in the second half.
Brown hit a three late in the third quarter to give Westside a 38-25 advantage.
The Renegades (17-3) got most of their fourth quarter points at the stripe, where Brown and Lester were a combined 12-12.
Brown, Davis (14) and Lester (13) paced the WHS scoring.
Whittney Justice had 20 for the Bobcats.
Named to the all-tournament team, along with Brown, were Davis, Lester and Megan Endicott of WHS; Whittney Justice Brittney Justice and Brandy Morrison of Summers County; Bre Pertee and Megan Davis of Wyoming East; Taylor Trump of Liberty; and Kaitlyn Stowers of Independence.
