LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Two young girls, two separate incidents, two untimely deaths.

On Tuesday afternoon, two young girls in rural Breckinridge County, about 60 miles southwest of Louisville, were hit by cars and killed, police said.

Weather-related traffic accidents abounded Tuesday across Kentucky, and police said one of the girls, 13-year-old Miranda S. Zepada of Irvington, was hit when her father stopped to help a stranded motorist along Kentucky 86 near Garfield.

The other, 11-year-old Lydia Hilty of Harned, was struck while bringing Christmas cookies to her mail carrier on Kentucky 690, coming out from behind the mail truck into the path of an oncoming truck, according to authorities. Weather was not reported to be a factor in that accident, officials said.

“It was a very tragic accident," said State Police Post 4 Dispatcher Jodi Shacklette.

Although unrelated, the separate incidents were expected to have an impact.

“Especially on the eve of Christmas Eve, and here you have two children killed in Breckinridge County, a rural area ... it’s very sad, very unusual," said Trooper Steve Pavey, spokesman for Kentucky State Police Post 4 in Elizabethtown.

Pavey said investigators would be at work into Wednesday morning on the hit-and-run death of Zepada, whose father, Steven M. Valdez, 41, of Lodiburg, was described as a “Good Samaritan." They said police were continuing to search for a motorist and the vehicle, a blue pickup truck, suspected in that death. He said the driver kept going after hitting the girl.

“It can’t get any sadder at this time of year for the families” of the two children, Pavey said.
